{"id":9818,"date":"2025-01-09T14:52:35","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T19:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/?p=9818"},"modified":"2025-05-13T11:54:37","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T16:54:37","slug":"southern-california-wildfires-how-donors-can-provide-relief-and-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/southern-california-wildfires-how-donors-can-provide-relief-and-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern California Wildfire Relief: How Donors Can Help"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of January 9, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/live-updates-wildfire-los-angeles-palisades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a series of deadly, wind-driven wildfires<\/a> have spread through Los Angeles County in California, resulting in multiple fatalities, over a thousand structures destroyed, and at least 180,000 residents under evacuation orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/what-is-a-donor-advised-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DAF donors are uniquely situated<\/a> to provide a rapid response in the face of challenges, and the need right now is significant. For donors who are witnessing this devastation and want to support those directly affected by the fires, we have created a non-exhaustive list of local and national organizations and <a href=\"https:\/\/cof.org\/page\/community-foundation-locator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">community foundations<\/a> actively engaged in relief efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By tapping into the expertise of organizations already working with the people affected by disasters, donors can lend support quickly and efficiently where it is most needed. If your employer manages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/why-workplace-giving-can-be-a-valuable-asset-for-both-employers-and-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employee giving efforts<\/a>, consider checking to see if they offer a match for donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When recommending a grant, please indicate \u201cSouthern California fires\u201d or \u201cPalisades fires\u201d as the purpose of the grant to ensure that the organization correctly designates the gift. We encourage donors to research all organizations prior to entering a grant recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donors can consider the following organizations, which are immediately serving those directly impacted across the region:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/supportlafd.kindful.com\/?campaign=1040812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation<\/a><\/strong> (EIN 27-2007326) is seeking funds to equip LAFD members battling wildfires with equipment and supplies such as emergency fire shelters, hydration backpacks and critical tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitatla.org\/how-to-apply\/disaster-relief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles<\/a><\/strong> (EIN-33-0416470) is accepting donations which are being used to help affected families with immediate support and will be heavily involved in long-term recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calfund.org\/funds\/wildfire-recovery-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The California Community Foundation<\/a><\/strong> (EIN-95-3510055) is managing immediate and long-term recovery efforts through direct support for location organizations through its Wildfire Recovery Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lafoodbank.org\/?_gl=1%2A1vhn80s%2A_gcl_au%2AODU0MDUwOTkwLjE3MzY0MzgxNjA.%2A_ga%2AMTYwODYzMDAxMi4xNzM2NDM4MTYx%2A_ga_DKX2QWW2GL%2AMTczNjQzODE2MC4xLjEuMTczNjQzOTIyMS40NC4wLjA.&amp;_ga=2.121563137.882053048.1736438161-1608630012.1736438161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Los Angeles Regional Food Bank<\/a><\/strong> is reaching out to its network of more than 600 partner agencies to assess their needs, and if they are in an evacuation area, if they continue to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bestfriends.org\/emergency-response\/los-angeles-wildfires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Best Friends Pet Adoption Center Los Angeles<\/a><\/strong> (EIN-23-7147797) is on the ground in Los Angeles, offering help and support to local animal welfare organizations in immediate need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eifoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Entertainment Industry Foundation<\/a><\/strong> (EIN 95-1644609), through its Defy: Disaster initiative, is supporting first responders, families and communities in need, and will support rebuilding efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wck.org\/news\/first-alert-ca-fires-jan25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Central Kitchen<\/a><\/strong> (EIN 27-3521132) provides fresh meals in response to humanitarian, climate and community crises, and is actively engaged in the Los Angeles area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/disasterphilanthropy.org\/disasters\/2024-north-american-wildfires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Center for Disaster Philanthropy<\/a><\/strong> (EIN 45-5257937) oversees ta permanent Wildfire Recovery Fund, which continually supports disaster relief in the United States, including long-term recovery and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/california-wildfires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GlobalGiving<\/a><\/strong> (EIN 30-0108263) supports nonprofits\u202fby connecting them to donors and companies. \u202fThe GlobalGiving California Wildfire Relief Fund is offering critical resources to locally driven relief efforts including shelter, food, water, medical care and mental health support to those in affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more
