{"id":8727,"date":"2023-10-24T10:55:53","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T15:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/?p=8727"},"modified":"2025-05-13T11:55:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T16:55:09","slug":"help-heal-veterans-provides-lifesaving-art-therapy-for-military-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/help-heal-veterans-provides-lifesaving-art-therapy-for-military-members\/","title":{"rendered":"Help Heal Veterans: Lifesaving Art Therapy for Military Members"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Art therapy, first introduced in the U.S. in the 1940s, is an <a href=\"https:\/\/arttherapy.org\/about-art-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">effective tool<\/a> when it comes to helping individuals \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychology.org\/resources\/what-is-art-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interpret, express, and resolve their emotions and thoughts<\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s become a particularly useful intervention for both veterans and active-duty military service members. A 2018 study found that for those in treatment with <a href=\"https:\/\/jmvh.org\/article\/a-review-of-art-therapy-among-military-service-members-and-veterans-with-post-traumatic-stress-disorder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PTSD and traumatic brain injuries<\/a>, art therapy \u201cfostered interpersonal relatedness, hopefulness and gratification.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/healvets.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Help Heal Veterans<\/a> has seen and heard these exact kinds of positive outcomes firsthand. The nonprofit organization, established in 1971 and now headquartered in Winchester, California, makes and distributes <a href=\"https:\/\/healvets.org\/resources\/request-kits-for-your-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free therapeutic craft kits<\/a> to veterans and active-duty service members in the U.S. and around the world. The kits, designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/healvets.org\/our-work\/craft-kits\/craft-care-specialists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">craft care specialists<\/a>, are sent out to homes, active military bases and veteran-based organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kristen O. Bennett, the vice president of development for Help Heal Veterans, says these kits can be \u201ctruly lifesaving and transformative&#8221; for those who receive them, adding, \u201cIt&#8217;s more than just making a craft.\u201d The organization\u2019s 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/healvets.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2022-donor-impact.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donor impact<\/a> report found that 75% of recipients with traumatic brain injuries said the kits helped, and 89% of vets reported a drop in their pain levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bennett says that veterans and service members are \u201cso appreciative of the support from donors.\u201d Donor dollars, Bennett directly towards creating the kits, shipping, and overall operations of the organization, which roughly two dozen staff members run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Help Heal Veterans \u201cback to pre-pandemic levels of need\u201d from veterans and facing rising costs due to inflation, Bennett says that giving vehicles like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/healvets.org\/giving\/donor-advised-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donor-advised funds<\/a> (DAFs) can be a major part of solving that problem.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/trust-based-philanthropy-a-primer-for-donors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unrestricted giving<\/a>, in particular, Bennett explains, \u201cis <strong>critical to our sustainability<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Help Heal Veterans\u2019 kits\u2014of which <a href=\"https:\/\/healvets.org\/celebrating-50-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">31 million<\/a> have been distributed to date\u2014are comprised of mostly reused and recycled materials like wood, leather, beads and jewelry. \u201cNot only are we helping our veterans that have served us, but we are also saving landfills from excess waste,\u201d Bennett explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not just their art therapy and sustainability initiatives that appeal to veterans, service members and supporters alike. The organization also offers the opportunity for <a href=\"https:\/\/healvets.org\/get-involved\/pen-pals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pen pal<\/a> correspondence between donors and recipients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriela Bailey, Help Heal Veterans\u2019 development coordinator, says, \u201cWe have heard so many stories from veterans over the years who have formed amazing bonds with donors. The pen pal program, she adds, \u201cis a great way for donors to connect with our veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
