We still remember the first characters we looked up to, the illustrations that drew us deeper into a beloved story and the family and teachers who read with us and made these words and pictures come alive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.umn.edu\/collections\/special\/clrc\/kerlan-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota<\/a> is one of the world\u2019s premier archives of children\u2019s literature, helping ensure the work of authors, illustrators and editors is studied, preserved and celebrated for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded with the collections of Dr. Irvin Kerlan, an FDA scientist, University of Minnesota alum and book collector, the Kerlan has expanded since his original transfer of materials in 1949. Now over 100,000 children\u2019s books and other related materials from more than 1,700 authors and illustrators make up the collection, including original art by Clement Hurd (illustrator of <em>Goodnight Moon<\/em>), drafts of work from Ezra Jack Keats (<em>The Snowy Day<\/em>) and proofs and letters from Madeline L&#8217;Engle (<em>A Wrinkle in Time<\/em>). The Kerlan also houses an extensive collection of rare comic books, science fiction and fantasy and other nineteenth and twentieth century literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe mission of the Kerlan is to collect, preserve and make the history and literature as well as the creative process of writing and illustration, accessible to researchers, scholars, students, faculty and anyone with an interest in children\u2019s books,\u201d says Lisa Von Drasek, the collection&#8217;s curator and an expert on children\u2019s literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kerlan also actively engages with contemporary children\u2019s literature. Each year, they honor an exceptional children\u2019s literature creator with their Kerlan Award. Andrea Davis Pinkney, a celebrated author, editor, publisher and librettist won the 2022 award. \u201cThe Kerlan has always served as a children\u2019s literature North Star,\u201d said Pinkney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Pinkney, as well as other authors and readers, the collection is a window into the creative process and a source of inspiration. \u201cWhen you walk into the Kerlan, you peel open the creative lives of hundreds of children\u2019s book creators. The Kerlan provides access to thousands of materials, inviting visitors to experience the joy and power of what it takes to create a children\u2019s book.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"quote-container scroll-watch\">\t\n            <svg width=\"72px\" height=\"52px\" viewBox=\"0 0 72 52\" version=\"1.1\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\">\n                <g stroke=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1\" fill=\"none\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\">\n                    <g transform=\"translate(-405.000000, -1977.000000)\" fill=\"#02B5CC\">\n                        <g transform=\"translate(350.000000, 1278.000000)\">\n                            <g transform=\"translate(55.000000, 647.000000)\">\n                                <path d=\"M40.3135498,103.84 L40.3135498,83.2493458 C40.3135498,59.0250467 61.5991041,52.3633645 72,52 L72,62.9009346 C63.5341545,63.8699065 58.212766,68.1091589 57.7290034,76.708785 L72,76.708785 L72,103.84 L40.3135498,103.84 Z M0,103.84 L0,83.2493458 C0,59.0250467 21.2855543,52.3633645 31.6864502,52 L31.6864502,62.9009346 C23.2206047,63.8699065 17.8992161,68.1091589 17.4154535,76.708785 L31.6864502,76.708785 L31.6864502,103.84 L0,103.84 Z\"><\/path>\n                            <\/g>\n                        <\/g>\n                    <\/g>\n                <\/g>\n            <\/svg>\n    \t\t\t<h2>Funds from DAFs enable the Kerlan to broaden the scope of the collection as well as make more of it available to a broad audience.<\/h2>\n    \t\t<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone can visit the Kerlan Collection in-person and study their collections, and Von Drasek and library staff are increasingly digitizing the works as well, developing online archives that can significantly broaden access to these unique primary sources. \u201cThese are labor intensive, <a href=\"https:\/\/kerlan.umn.edu\/online-exhibits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open access resources<\/a> which provide primary source materials to thousands of teachers and librarians, scholars and students each year,\u201d says Von Drasek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking forward, the Kerlan plans on <a href=\"https:\/\/kerlan.umn.edu\/realizing-the-vision-of-the-kerlan-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">establishing an endowed curatorship<\/a> and diversifying the collection with global children\u2019s literature. But the Kerlan would not be able to advance their mission without generous charitable support. \u201cFunds from DAFs enable the Kerlan to broaden the scope of the collection as well as make more of it available to a broad audience,\u201d says Von Drasek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pinkney wishes to impress upon the public that, \u201cNow, more than ever, it\u2019s vital to support endeavors that provide access to resources,\u201d Pickney says. \u201cThe Kerlan\u2019s digital exhibits extend a hand to the community of readers and learners, reminding all of us that stories
