In January 2023, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/monitoring\/monthly-report\/global\/202301\/supplemental\/page-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Centers for Environmental Information<\/a> reported that this year is \u201cvirtually certain\u201d to rank in the top ten warmest on record. This rise in temperature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/stories\/climate-action-whats-new-and-whats-next-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fuels a rise in natural disasters and humanitarian crises globally<\/a>, and ignoring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/climate-change#tab=tab_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate change\u2019s role<\/a> in these events undercuts the effectiveness of addressing the needs of those most vulnerable to climate change-driven crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate change is caused by a parallel increase of greenhouse gases present in the Earth\u2019s atmosphere and a decrease in sufficient absorption or ways to capture those gases. The increase in greenhouse gases\u2014like carbon dioxide and methane\u2014in our atmosphere causes global temperatures to rise, setting off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/article\/10-countries-risk-climate-disaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a chain reaction<\/a> affecting every environmental system on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/syr\/resources\/spm-headline-statements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate data<\/a> strongly indicates that the consequences of decision-making during the next decade regarding the climate crisis will be felt for millennia. Governments, businesses and individuals across the globe have a part to play in combatting climate change, and while philanthropy alone will not solve the climate crisis, it can be incredibly impactful.
