From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/2022\/6\/6\/23157103\/child-care-workers-teachers-covid-fatality-death-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the tragic toll on childcare professionals<\/a> to the overwhelming logistical shift to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/remote-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remote instruction<\/a>, K-12 education is one area of American life immensely affected by the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chalkbeat<\/a><\/em>, an award-winning nonprofit newsroom focused on education reporting, saw firsthand the shifts that started in March 2020 and covered the pandemic\u2019s impact on education closely ever since. Established in 2014, the site has followed local education stories and national policy closely, but in the last three years, \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coronavirus<\/a> shaped our coverage,\u201d says CJ Ortu\u00f1o, <em>Chalkbeat<\/em>\u2019s Vice President of Philanthropy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Chalkbeat<\/em> currently has about 100 employees spanning eight bureaus throughout the country. That includes reporters dedicated to some of the largest school systems in the country (in New York City and Chicago), state-level coverage in Colorado, Indiana and Tennessee, and national stories. Donors really saw the importance of continuing to shed light on such a complex system as education.<\/h2>\n    \t\t<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thankfully, during this pivotal point for education information and reporting, Ortu\u00f1o says, <em>Chalkbeat<\/em> was able to expand its operations and add more reporters, largely in part because of donors and philanthropic support. Approximately 10% of <em>Chalkbeat<\/em>\u2019s total funding comes by way of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/what-is-a-donor-advised-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donor-advised funds<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe saw some of our largest gifts during the COVID-19 crisis,\u201d he said. \u201cDonors really saw the importance of continuing to shed light on such a complex system as education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe lion\u2019s share of funding goes to our reporters to make sure they have the resources and tools they need to do their work and focus solely on their on-the-ground reporting,\u201d explains Senior Development Director Lee Whack. As a nonprofit newsroom, <em>Chalkbeat<\/em> isn\u2019t bound to a traditional advertising or subscription model, relying instead on sponsorships and reader and funder support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Chalkbeat<\/em>\u2019s reporting includes a wide spectrum of local and national education news topics like public policy, school budgets, mental health, diversity and equity, teacher training and more. Focused primarily on K-12, the site is increasing its higher education reporting and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/en-espanol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coverage in Spanish<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philanthropic support for the kind of local reporting <em>Chalkbeat<\/em> engages in is especially important at a time with such a pronounced decline in local reporting and the rapid shuttering of smaller newspapers. Local papers historically covered school systems, but a 2022 report by the <em>Columbia Journalism Review<\/em> found that, between 2004 and 2020, there has been an \u201castounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/local_news\/local_reporters_decline_coverage_density.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">57% decline in newspaper newsroom employees<\/a>,\u201d creating \u201cinformation vacuums.\u201d The report went on to call the current state of local reporting in America \u201ca truly bleak picture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But nonprofit newsrooms like <em>Chalkbeat<\/em> have helped fill the gap in local coverage, going to evening school board meetings and planning sessions that national outlets can\u2019t or won\u2019t cover. The work generates results. <a href=\"https:\/\/ar.chalkbeat.org\/twentytwentyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The site tracked 269 \u201creal-world impacts\u201d<\/a> as a result of their reporting last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Ortu\u00f1o and Whack point to both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/trust-based-philanthropy-a-primer-for-donors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unrestricted giving<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/dafs-in-focus-dafs-address-both-near-and-long-term-nonprofit-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-term giving<\/a> as one of the keys to their organization&#8217;s ongoing efforts to keep local reporting alive \u2013 including their venture into local election and voting coverage with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.votebeat.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Votebeat<\/a><\/em> \u2013 as well as plans to have in-house journalism training for writers and expand into more bureaus throughout the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe nature of news is unpredictable,\u201d explains Ortu\u00f1o. \u201cWe need to be able to have the flexibility to go where the news is and share that information within our communities. Unrestricted dollars help us make decisions about where we can go and, oftentimes, those are the places that need it the most.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
