{"id":7291,"date":"2025-06-23T01:07:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T06:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/?p=7291"},"modified":"2026-01-28T16:26:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T21:26:31","slug":"project-home-providing-safety-and-support-for-lgbtq-homeless-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/project-home-providing-safety-and-support-for-lgbtq-homeless-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"A Place to Feel Safe and Seen: How Project HOME Helps LGBTQ+ Youth Rebuild Stability and Hope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ+ young adults throughout the country are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/national-news\/articles\/2018-05-15\/lgbtq-teens-feel-unsafe-and-unwelcome-despite-growing-support-for-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">facing discrimination<\/a> at alarming new rates. One of the most urgent and distressing facets of this crisis is LGBTQ+ youth homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research from Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago discovered that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapinhall.org\/research\/lgbtq-young-adults-experience-homelessness-at-more-than-twice-the-rate-of-peers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LGBTQ youth are at more than double the risk of homelessness compared to non-LGBTQ peers.<\/a>\u201d The study also found that this already vulnerable population \u201creported higher rates of trauma and adversity, including twice the rate of early death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study <a href=\"https:\/\/escholarship.org\/uc\/item\/80x75033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">from UCLA found<\/a> that some of the key causes driving homelessness among the LGBTQ+ young adult population were familial rejection and forcible ejection from the home, abuse at home, aging out of foster care, and neglect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve experienced a similar crisis here in Philadelphia,\u201d says Annette Jeffrey, the Vice President of Development and Communications for the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projecthome.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project HOME<\/a>. The city currently estimates its homeless population <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projecthome.org\/news\/philadelphia-2024-point-time-count-released\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to be around 5,200<\/a>. In partnership with nonprofits like Project HOME, the city serves thousands of people each year with services like emergency shelter, transitional housing and rapid rehousing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Established in 1989, Project HOME focuses on offering permanent, subsidized housing, as well as providing comprehensive services and outreach for the thousands of individuals and families in the region who have experienced homelessness. \u201cOur mission is to end, and prevent, chronic street homelessness in Philadelphia,\u201d Jeffrey says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because so many LGBTQ+ young adults were in need a safe and supportive environment in Philadelphia, Project HOME developed and opened the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projecthome.org\/gloria-casarez-residence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gloria Casarez Residence<\/a> in 2018, an affordable, LGBTQ+ friendly housing complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in North Philadelphia\u2019s Ludlow neighborhood, the Gloria Casarez Residence (named after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muralarts.org\/artworks\/a-tribute-to-gloria-casarez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">late, local LGBT rights activist<\/a>) has 30 living spaces available to homeless, formerly homeless, or at-risk individuals aged 18-23. Like all Project HOME facilities, the residence also provides amenities like storage, outdoor space, a computer lab, a gym and a community room, but it is the community and support residents have access to that sets the space apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOftentimes LGBTQ+ youth experienced trauma within their families of origin or out in the world, and really benefit from being in a supportive environment where they feel safe, understood and have access to whatever it is they need,\u201d Jeffrey says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe get in at the beginning of the problem of homelessness for young adults,\u201d she explains. Project HOME not only provides housing, but support through their programming for young adults. Grants and donations account for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projecthome.org\/news\/fiscal-year-2021-annual-report#numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 30% of the organization\u2019s revenue<\/a>.<\/strong> Jeffrey says that when it comes to donor-advised funds (DAFs), gifts from supporters can \u201cgo where you want them to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past ten years, Project HOME has received a total of $6 million in funding from donor-advised funds and currently takes in about 300 donations from DAFs each year. Jeffrey notes that the organization communicates frequently with monthly, long-term donors \u201cto let them know what their giving is allowing us to accomplish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recurring and long-term funding allows Project HOME to serve program participants with outreach, training, health and education support, and more. Jeffrey says these services provide participants a baseline from which they can further develop, grow and thrive: \u201cWhen you have what you need, you can start to dream about what you hope
