National Philanthropic Trust\u2019s donors recommend thousands of grants every year. This new series, Grants In Action<\/a>, highlights the breadth of causes and organizations NPT\u2019s donors are supporting with grant recommendations from their donor-advised fund accounts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve gone to a baseball game or listened to a stump speech, you\u2019re familiar with hearing \u201csupport the troops\u201d as a general slogan. But if you work or volunteer with Hire Heroes USA<\/a>, it\u2019s your mission. Established in 2007 and based out of Alpharetta, GA, Hire Heroes USA helps get U.S. military members, veterans and military spouses back into the civilian workforce\u2014at no cost to the job seeker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of thousands of servicemembers transition back to civilian life each year. According to the organization, job placement and assistance is their number one request. Surveys show that many veterans find their return difficult<\/a>\u2014that includes financial troubles like paying bills or finding healthcare. A steady, well-paying job can make all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl Ewell, the organization\u2019s Director of Development, says that this process begins with their team engaging with clients. \u201cClients work one-on-one with a transition specialist, who works as a mentor, career coach and accountability partner.\u201d The transition specialist will help the client create a job search plan, create and customize necessary materials, like their resume or online profile, and connect them with additional resources they may need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clients also have access to other Hire Heroes USA team members, like referral and training specialists, volunteer coordinators and employment specialists. These team members work together as a cohesive unit in order to get their client the job that\u2019s right for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We celebrate each and every hire\u2026we know that success is the start, not the end, of their stories.<\/h2>\n \t\t<\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, as Ewell points out, their clients aren\u2019t a hard sell; they\u2019re undeniable assets to the organizations they join. \u201cIt\u2019s widely believed that companies should hire veterans, service members and military spouses because it\u2019s the right thing to do\u2014and it is,\u201d she says, \u201cbut that belief in and of itself misses the bigger picture: it\u2019s good for business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ewell points out that the military and veteran community is \u201cdiverse and comes to the workforce with knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed and positively impact the companies that hire them.\u201d A Council on Foreign Relations study<\/a> found that there are 1.3 million active-duty members of the military, and that a number of branches are more racially and ethnically diverse than the civilian workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe value they bring to their employer cannot be overstated,\u201d Ewell notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the donors and partners who feel the same passion for U.S. military members, Ewell says that their contributions are like \u201cthe proverb of teaching a man to fish.\u201d It\u2019s not simply providing a service, Ewell says, it\u2019s \u201cgiving our clients the ability to feed themselves and their families over their lifetime\u201d by helping them find the stability and security a good job can provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To date, Hire Heroes USA has helped more than 60,000 clients get hired. Over the years and thousands of hires, Ewell says that each client makes a significant impact on the nonprofit\u2019s staff: \u201cWe celebrate each and every hire\u2026we know that success is the start, not the end, of their stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
