{"id":4493,"date":"2020-07-07T13:05:12","date_gmt":"2020-07-07T18:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/?p=4493"},"modified":"2022-01-20T11:50:12","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T16:50:12","slug":"donor-advised-fund-giving-has-surged-during-covid-19-pandemic-nptrust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/donor-advised-fund-giving-has-surged-during-covid-19-pandemic-nptrust\/","title":{"rendered":"Donor-Advised Fund Giving Has Surged During COVID-19\u2014and You Can Keep the Generosity Going"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, the philanthropic sector has responded with remarkable speed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, flexibility<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">innovation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hundreds of foundations and other organizations have pledged to loosen or eliminate&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cof.org\/news\/call-action-philanthropys-commitment-during-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">restrictions on grants<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and recently the Ford Foundation announced that it would offer $1 billion of taxable social bonds in order to increase its grantmaking.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nptrust.org\/philanthropic-resources\/philanthropist\/leading-change-locally-how-community-foundations-are-addressing-the-covid-19-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Co<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">mmunity foundations<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also been leading the charge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and have mobilized<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commfoundations.com\/blog\/2020\/3\/11\/community-foundations-nationwide-launch-efforts-to-help-communities-affected-by-the-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">$883 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">illion<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in relief funds&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to help those in need across the U.S.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Behind&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">these efforts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;is an army of donors, big and small<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. While it is difficult to analyze&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">donor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s\u2019&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">response fully&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at this early juncture<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, National Philanthropic Trust (NPT) is pleased to share some encouraging, preliminary numbers from the period beginning March 1 and ending on May 31, 2020:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The total number of grants our donors recommended&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">increased by 53 percent over the same time period last year, and the dollar amount&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">soared<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;by 64 percent. This represents the busiest grantmaking period<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;in NPT\u2019s nearly 25-year history.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Donor focus has shifted, with organizations that serve public and social benefit needs\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">including food banks, community foundations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and advocacy organizations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014becoming the top giving category with 27 percent of the total dollar amount of grants issued by NPT<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, compared with 18 percent last year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;(see table below).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While some philanthropic sectors received a smaller share of total giving than last year,&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">every<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;sector experienced an increase in the dollar volume of grants. This finding is significant, as it indicates that donors remain committed to charities they have always supported. These&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">grants are especially powerful, as they allow nonprofits the flexibility to use&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">funds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;where&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">most<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;needed.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you made a restricted grant earlier in the year, consider releasing the charity from the grant terms so that they can respond more nimbly to today\u2019s needs.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recurring gifts are also helpful to nonprofits, as they provide a steady, reliable flow of income.
